About Us

The IMF is an organization of 186 member countries-virtually covering the globe-pledged to assist one another with information and financial support to create a world economic environment in which all will prosper. The IMF provides a forum for discussion of domestic and international economic issues. Its member nations contribute to a pool of currencies from which all may borrow for a short time to tide them over periods of difficulty in meeting their international payments obligations. Through consultation and collaboration, as well as by financing members with balance of payments problems, the IMF seeks to facilitate the growth of international trade, to raise levels of income and employment, and to develop the productive resources of all members.

The research that underlies the IMF's activities draws on the expertise of more than 1,000 IMF economists backed by information-gathering resources that span the globe. The IMF uses these resources and expertise to conduct a wide range of economic and financial studies, the results of which are often made available through its publications.
